FONTAINEBLEAU & BARBIZON DAY TOUR | PRIVATE TRIP FROM PARIS

Book a private Fontainebleau & Barbizon day tour from Paris with your expert licensed guide who will drive you and guide inside the different sites: discover the beautiful castle of Fontainebleau, the only royal and imperial château in France that has been continuously inhabited for seven centuries.

After being picked up at your accommodation, you licensed tour guide will drive you first to Fontainebleau (driving distance is normally a little bit more than 1 hour). This private Fontainebleau tour will select and show you some of the most beautiful rooms of the chateau which has the advantage of being much less crowded than Versailles (there are 1500 rooms in this amazing place, so yes you need a guide to see the best ones!).

Visiting Fontainebleau will allow you to see the richly adorned interior of the castle with its tapestries, stuccoes, gilded carvings, frescoes and beautiful paintings. During this day trip to Fontainebleau, your tour guide will make you travel in time from the Medieval Era up to Napoleon Bonaparte. See the Francis 1st Gallery, admire the paintings by the Italian Renaissance artists Rosso Fiorentino and Primaticcio (called the first school of Fontainebleau) invited by the King of France, Francis the First and learn about the Mannerist paintings and sculptures produced for the French court there back then.

Under the First Empire, Napoleon prefered the castle of Fontainebleau to the one in Versailles, even though he only stayed 170 days there in 10 years. The castle of Fontainebleau is also where Napoleon signed The Treaty of Fontainebleau, which ended Napoleon’s rule as Emperor of France.

The other half day of this tour will focus on Barbizon, a small rural and charming village near Fontainebleau, where another school of painters was created much later in the middle of the 19th century, with artists such as Jean-François Millet (known for his paintings "The Gleaners" or "The Angelus" that we can show you during one of our Orsay museum guided tours Charles François Daubigny (one of the precursors of impressionism) and Theodore Rousseau who all came to Barbizon to paint directly inspired from nature.
