Located four hours away from Paris on the north west coast of France, near Brittany but still in Normandy, the Mont Saint Michel island is home to centuries of tradition.
Built over 1300 years on an inhospitable and rocky island, the amazing architecture of the abbey shows the expertise and the mastery of generations of workers and builders since the Middle Ages and this is why it is still called "La Merveille", the Wonder of the West nowadays.
How the cult of Saint Michael came into being is told in a Xth century manuscript, La Revelatio ecclesiae sancti Michaelis in Monte Tumba. According to this original document, in 708, Aubert, Bishop of nearby Avranches had a dream one night in which he saw the Archangel Michael ordering him to build a church on Mont Tombe, only inhabited by a few hermits at the time. According to the legend, when the bishop dared to express doubts, the Archangel thrust a finger through his skull after appearing to him for the third time! Finally, bishop Aubert will listen to the Archangel to have a first chapel erected on the site, renamed "Mount Saint Michael at the peril of the sea" in 710.
Richard 1st, Duke of Normandy will request in 966 to have monks settlle there, they will follow the order of Saint Benedict, spending their days writing and copying manuscripts (hence the name of "city of the books" given to the island).
Little by little, Mont Saint Michel becomes one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe and is still today one of the most visited places in France with up to 15,000 visitors daily (this is why having a private tour guide can be very handy, we know all the short cuts). Over time, the spiritual foundations of the abbey waned, and in the late eighteenth (from the French revolution on) and early nineteenth centuries it was used as a prison, becoming the "Bastille of the Sea" until 1863. In 1874, the French government assumed responsibility for the abbey's upkeep and restoration and finally in 1979 the Mont Saint Michel island and its bay are added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Since 2014 the Mont Saint Michel has recovered its maritime character thanks to a 2500 feet bridge featuring a footparth for pedestrians, replacing the 135 year old causeway and allowing this way the sea water to flow freely around the island again.
Therefore we can now only have access to the town and the island via a local bus shuttle system leaving from the car parking lot, your guide knows how to take the fast lane and will help you for this as well.
During this day trip from Paris to Mont Saint Michel, your driver-guide will give you a tailored private guided tour including the skip the line admission tickets to enter the abbey as fast as possible. Admire the breathtaking view of the bay especially at low tide from the top terrasse, visit more than 20 rooms inside this Gothic jewel. After lunch (which is not included in our tour rate) you will have some time to explore the island and walk on the surrounding ancient ramparts.
Keep in mind that the abbey is built on the summit of the island at 80 meter in altitude (263 feet high approximately) there are 350 steps to climb to reach the entrance of the abbey; therefore this tour is definitely not adapted for disabled people, if you have knee/hip issues. It can be also quite challenging if you have a young child with a stroller to carry. As a reminder, we only give private tours; we do not give shared/semi-private tours and we do not pick up clients outside of Paris.
This Paris to Mont Saint Michel tour is available year round; however the abbey is closed on May 1st, Dec 25th & Jan 1st.
Due to the distance between Paris and Mont Saint Michel, we would highly recommend you to stay overnight in Normandy.
We would be very pleased to give you a 2-Day tour including Mont Saint Michel on the first day and the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy on the second day (spending one night in Bayeux, we do not include the hotel room fees in our rates but can definitely recommend you several hotels there) or one day visiting Mont Saint Michel and one day discovering the historic walled city of Saint Malo (where the story of "All the Light We Cannot See" -a war novel written by American author Anthony Doerr- takes place during World War 2) or you can also discover the charming medieval city of Dinan in Brittany.
