GIVERNY HALF DAY TOUR FROM PARIS (MONET'S HOME & GARDEN)

Are you ready to follow in the footsteps of the most famous impressionist artist of its time, to visit wonderful, colorful and peaceful places? We offer you this cultural focused tour to make you discover some artistic wonders and beauties of France.

Visiting the property of Monet in your Giverny tour:

Visit Monet’s house where he lived half of his life (between 1886 and 1926) in Giverny. The drive between Paris and Giverny takes approximately one hour. Left by his son Michel to the Académie des Arts in 1966, Claude Monet's estate will reopen in 1980, after four years of extensive renovations and thanks to the fund-raising skills of Gerald and Florence Van der Kemp.

During this half-day tour, you will visit the Monet's property (home and garden) with an expert guide. Share the privacy of the painter by discovering the place he lived in. You might understand some of his paintings after the tour.

You will be impressed to enter and visit these typical places where bright colors and astonishing patterns mix in a full-sized painting. Our Giverny guided tour includes a visit of the Clos Normand flower garden: each season brings its variety of blooming flowers and trees, you will enjoy a festival of colors: its yellow irises, forget-me-nots, tulips, nasturtiums, lis, peonies, roses and... so much more!

In 1893, Monet created in the gardens at his home in Giverny the water lily pond that inspired his most celebrated works. You will visit the Japanese inspired water garden on the other side of the road, the wisteria covered Japanese bridge and the famous water-lily pond created by deriving the Ru river. Relive Monet's life, learn about the quite unusual personal life of the founding father of Impressionism, his strong personality, his struggles and his passions and influences.

When young Claude Monet and his family moved to Le Havre, in Normandy, he met Eugene Boudin who taught him to paint outdoors. Monet’s aunt, Marie Jeanne Lecadre took great care of the painter: in exchange of his promise to enroll in a formal art institute, she bought his way out of the military service. During Monet’s time in Paris, he formed friendships with other young painters such as Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley and Paul Cézanne, they called themselves the “Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers, Etc”.

Between 1874 and 1886 the group will organize eight major exhibits that included some of the best-known work of the time. Monet Water Lillies Tour At the end of his life, Monet reaches the achievement of his career by painting large water lilies, with panels over 6 feet high and 20 to 25 feet wide that he had envisioned to be exposed in an oval shaped room for the public to have the feeling that they were surrounded by the painting (on request, you can see them today at the Orangerie museum with our tour guide on another tour). Still painting in his late 80’s, Monet died in Giverny of lung cancer on December 5th, 1926 at the age of 86.

Your Paris to Giverny tour run through:

After being picked up at your hotel or apartment in Paris in the morning (or if you prefer, in the afternoon) your licensed tour guide will drive you to Giverny, a charming village in Normandy of 500 inhabitants, 50 miles away north west from Paris.

We usually pick you up at 8:30am from your accommodation in Paris in the morning or at 1:30pm in the afternoon. All our tour guides are fully licensed and allowed to comment in the gardens where you will see on one side of the road the Clos Normand and on the other side the pond, the Japanese bridge, the water lilies, the bamboos, and of course an incredible collection of beautiful flowers depending on the season. Visit the pink house, decorated in the same color schemes that Monet admired and recapture its atmosphere and charms of times past.

Our tour guides are not allowed to speak inside Monet's house, therefore all the explanations regarding the house will be given to you before you enter the house. Inside Monet’s home, you will be able to dive in the past and see among others the reading room (blue salon), the impressive collection of the artist’s original Japanese prints, the larder (epicerie) the living room/workshop, Monet’s bedchamber, Alice Hoschede’s bedchamber, Blanche’s recently restored room, the yellow dining room and the blue ceramic kitchen. On the way out from the house we will give you some time if you wish to purchase some souvenirs in the former workshop where Monet painted the big water lilies serie at the end of his life. On the way back to Paris, if time permits, your driver-guide will drive you back via a scenic road called “route des crêtes” so that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and landscape of the Vexin area.
